Richard MacDonald has spent over thirty years exploring the wellsprings of his inspiration and bringing his distinctive artistic vision to fruition: important themes have emerged and become strengthened over time. The idea of equality born of difference, and the inherent play of energy that comes from the juxtaposition of contrasts—male and female, passive and active, performance and introspection, all come together in “Ethereal Embrace”. These elegantly poised figures portray the Dance of Life, with balance, trust and harmony between the sexes as vital components of their bond. Dance is a performing art that all human cultures develop—it is as natural to us as breathing—and like sculpture, it communicates deeply, without words. This piece is a metaphor of many layers, that will unfold for the viewer over time: it is an expression of love, trust, and the beauty of the human body and spirit.
