In 1987, before proposing a monument for MGM’s corporate headquarters in Los Angeles, Richard MacDonald spent many hours researching the role of myth in ancient and modern society. During this research, he developed his philosophy –and art form -- Architectonica. When he looked at our society, he saw people trapped by the architecture of our industrial age: structured family units, jobs, businesses… structured ways of dressing, living, interacting. But when he turned to myth and legend, he saw moral ideals. Against all odds, heroes and heroines upheld a spirit of courage, honor and love. From these two observations, Architectonica was born. The art form starts with a column or base representing our structured society. From this column or base individuals emerge, radiating their unique triumph of spirit. The artist’s goal: inspire these triumphs of spirit in our families and society.
