The Three Fates brings together Clotho, the giver of life, Lachesis, the measurer of destiny, and Atropos, the inevitable release. Seated back-to-back, the three figures embody the ancient story of the sisters who spin, measure, and ultimately cut the thread of every human life. Richard MacDonald sculpted each Fate individually in the nude, beginning with the human form and building from the inside out. Anatomy, gesture, balance, and movement come first, allowing each figure to possess her own character and presence before the three are brought together. In the nude version, nothing obscures that foundation. The expressive line of the body becomes part of the storytelling. Together, Clotho, Lachesis, and Atropos form a timeless meditation on life's passage: its beginning, its unfolding, and its inevitable release.
